CoQ10 and Heart Health
Your heart is one of the most metabolically active organs in your body. It pumps oxygen and nutrients to all parts of your body more than 100,000 times a day. In a healthy body, tissue concentrations of CoQ10 are very high in the heart. When CoQ10 is abundantly present, the nutrient helps your heart do more work while expending less energy. The result is a stronger, more youthful heart.
Low tissue and blood levels of CoQ10 have been associated with a wide spectrum of heart and vascular problems: high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, coronary artery disease, ventricular arrhythmia and heart valve disease.
It's important to note that many cholesterol-lowering medicines actually deplete vital stores of CoQ10 in the blood and the heart.
If you're on a statin drug, should you take CoQ10?
Yes. Statin drugs (cholesterol-lowering drugs) have been shown to lower the body's stores of CoQ10 to the point of actually causing damage to the heart. (The Canadian government now requires that certain cholesterol medications contain labels recommending that people who take these medications will experience reduced CoQ10 levels as a result.) Thus, it is advisable to replenish the body with the CoQ10 nutrient at least once a day. It is important to note that CoQ10 supplementation does not interfere with the cholesterol-lowering effects of such statin drugs as LipitorŽ and ZocorŽ.
Is it possible to take too much CoQ10 or overdose on the substance?
No. CoQ10 is not a drug and there is no toxicity associated with it, even at very high dosage levels.
